Which Level Am I?
Level 1 or Beginner is the starting point to an amazing ride. We lay here the blocking foundations for you to understand the Pilates Method, the equipment, and, most importantly, your own body. This is where we focus on developing the technique and the reasons for each move. We kindly ask first time clients to join the Beginner class as it also gives us the opportunity to get to know you and give you options and modifications. Even if you've done Pilates or other physical activities before, please make sure to start here as you might be new to our approach
Level 2-3: Having built up from Level 1 (in our studio), we start reaching for the core of Pilates (Level 3). Each class we add new moves and layers that will enable you to safely perform more advanced exercises. Level 2 is a fun bridge from Beginners to Intermediate where we continue to develop each move. Level 3 is where experienced students (a minimum of 6 continuous months would be advised) would start becoming more independent and feeling more courageous to aim for more.
Level 4 and Beyond: An Advanced student is one who knows the choreography of each move, the sequence of the repertoire, the set up of the equipment, and the concept behind Contrology (the original name of the Pilates Method).
What Reformer Level Am I?
Level 1 – Foundational, Intentional, Essential
This is where your Pilates journey begins — whether you're completely new or just new to our studio. Level 1 focuses on form, breath, equipment, and understanding the classical sequence. You’ll build strength, control, and deep body awareness. The goal isn’t to rush — it’s to move with purpose and precision.
All new clients are required to begin with Level 1, even if you’ve done Pilates before. Our teaching style and equipment (like the Gratz Reformer) may be different from what you’re used to, and starting here ensures your safety and progress. This is to help you build a strong foundation, and make the experience more enjoyable for you and the group. Therefore, to ensure readiness for Level 2, we request trying a few (5-10) continuous Level 1 in our studio; we might also require teacher's approval.
Level 2 – Progress with Confidence
Level 2 is a natural next step for clients who have developed confidence and consistency in Level 1 (in our studio). We introduce more flow, complexity, and layered movement, while continuing to refine the technique built in earlier sessions.
To join Level 2, we ask that you complete at least 5–10 Level 1 classes in our studio and/or get approval from a teacher. This helps ensure that you're ready for the increased pace and that the group experience remains smooth and safe for everyone.
We may kindly ask you to stay in Level 1 a bit longer if we see that Level 2 might not be safe or supportive for you — yet. It’s never a setback, just part of a thoughtful and personalized progression.
If you’ve practiced classical Pilates in Belgium or abroad and feel ready to jump into Level 2, just send us a message (text or email) with a little bit about your background. We’d love to hear about your experience — and if it sounds like a good fit, we’ll happily accommodate you in Level 2 🌟
Curious what you need to know for Level 2?
Check out our blog post and Instagram for a full list of moves we expect you to know before advancing — including Short Spine Massage, Coordination, and Stomach Massage Reach. You’ll also find a quick video reel that shows them in action.
Not sure where you fit? Just ask your teacher — we’re happy to guide you.
What can I expect in a Level 3 Mat and Reformer Class?
The Level 3 Mat and Reformer class is for those who have built a strong foundation with us through consistent practice in our Level 1 and 2 classes. We recommend having practiced with us for at least six months, as these earlier levels help you master the core techniques and movement patterns that are essential for this faster-paced class. Here, we move together as a group, working through more advanced exercises, intricate choreography, and dynamic transitions. The energy is high, and the flow is quick, so having a solid understanding of the basics ensures you can fully engage and enjoy the challenge! If you’re just starting, no worries—our Level 1 and 2 classes are the perfect place to begin, and we promise you’ll get there one day. We can’t wait to see you progress!
What are other things to consider?
The studio is an open, bright, and welcoming space where we expect to provide everyone with a time to enrich their mind-body connection. Please leave your phone in one of the lockers provided. Photos cannot be taken unless authorized.
Be respectful towards yourself, the class, and the instructor. Don’t push your body beyond its current limit. You will get better every time. Keep an open mind on different approaches and discoveries. Be positive and talk openly about any questions or doubts you may have. We are here to support you on your path!
What is the difference between Classical and Contemporary Pilates?
Great question! At Pilates School of Movement, we focus entirely on Classical Pilates—the method just as Joseph Pilates created it, using the original equipment he designed and the original sequence of exercises. Most of us have trained in both Classical and Contemporary styles, but we’ve found that staying true to the original system brings incredible results—not just in our own bodies, but even more so in the noticeable progress and lasting improvements we’ve seen in our clients over time.
We truly celebrate all styles of Pilates and the variety they bring to the movement world. Contemporary Pilates often blends in techniques from other practices, and while we might occasionally bring in elements from our past training when it supports a client’s needs, our passion is Classical. Its focus on breath, flow, control, precision, coordination, centering, and the mind-body connection offers a powerful foundation—and we’ve witnessed again and again how these principles create real transformation in strength, posture, confidence, and overall well-being. It’s what keeps us inspired every day.
